The Senses

As my life and practice ebb and flow, on and off the mat, I am continually reminded to tune back into the simplicity of being, to stay grounded. I am doing this by continually reconnecting with my senses, a practice that keeps me in the present moment. So simple, yet so easily forgotten, or perhaps this may be a new idea.

It has taken me a lifetime to learn this truth; to remain or become aware of sound, smell, taste and touch and sight to be in the know, in the moment. Through this sensing within, rather than continuously responding to the stimuli around me, I come to a greater sense of calm and appreciation, gratitude for my life. The simple practice and exploration of things such as the contact of my feet with the earth, the sounds around me, and the lingering tastes and aromas help me self regulate.

If you are interested in exploring ways to feel less activated, to more easily come into a peaceful place, try regularly bringing your focus to your senses. Yoga and breath work will stay connected within.

Taste - what am I eating?

Enjoying seasonal foods

Sound - what am I listening to?

"Dream (before the wind blows it all away)" by Max Richter
This music helps me rest. I have also found it supports a sense of calm while I am working.

Touch - how am I moving?

With the warmth and sun of spring, being outside among the bees and trees is revitalising. The mountain nearby continually invites investigation as it changes with the season, as does the garden where there is much to do to support the creatures and my produce.

Sight - what am I reading?

I am exploring things that hold me back, limit me, stop me being my best self. These words resonate, perhaps for you too?

"If you do not fail some of the time you are not swinging high enough." Rick Hanson

Smell - what am I smelling?

The essence of spring; the fragrance of Daphne in my garden and around the house.

Offerings - nourish yourself…..
